Hey everyone,
National Marrow Donor Program LogoA close friend of Jack’s Mannequin and the Dear Jack Foundation recently reached out to let us know about a young man named Nick Glasgow, who is currently in a dire situation battling leukemia. He is in serious need of a transplant but as an asian-american it has been much harder for him to find a matched donor. Please read on to learn how you or someone you know may be able to help.

In March 2009, 28- year old Nick Glasgow was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). He has had three chemotherapies, none of which have put his cancer in remission. Nick is now in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant to save his life, but because of his ethnic background – 25% Japanese and 75% Caucasian – his doctors have told him he has a 0% chance of finding a matching donor due to a lack of minority registrants in the national bone marrow database. His family, friends, and those here at Dear Jack are determined to beat the odds! If you or anyone you know is Asian-American you could be the one that can save Nick’s life. You do not need to be Japanese/Caucasian; anyone of Asian-American descent could be the match. Even if you are not Asian-American, you could still help save another’s life by registering: over 6,000 people are searching the bone marrow registry every day for a donor. Joining the registry is easy: if you are Asian-American, visit www.aadp.org to request a free testing kit. When you receive the kit, follow the instructions to take a simple cheek swab, fill out the paperwork, and send it back (overnight if possible) to the given address. Please write in big letters on the envelope “REGISTERING FOR NICK GLASGOW,” as this will help expedite test results for Nick. For those not of Asian descent, visit www.bethematch.org to request a free testing kit through June 22, 2008. If you go through “Be The Match” please place the code “CM579” or “AADPmarrowthon” on the application to expedite testing for Nick. Whether a match for Nick or not, you will be placed on the bone marrow registry, providing hope and a possible match for thousands of people with blood cancers. Thank you so much for helping Nick and others like him!
